Veterans & Substance Use

Veterans face unique challenges that can increase the risk of developing substance use disorder (SUD), including exposure to trauma, chronic pain from service-related injuries, mental health conditions such as PTSD or depression, and difficulties adjusting to civilian life.

Substance use among veterans can show up in many ways, including increased isolation, changes in sleep or eating patterns, risky behaviors such as binge drinking, or difficulty stopping use despite negative consequences. Because military culture often emphasizes toughness and self-reliance, some veterans may delay seeking help or attempt to cope on their own. Despite these challenges, recovery is possible, and many veterans successfully engage in treatment each year.

ACCA offers a range of evidence-based services designed to support veterans at different stages of need, from prevention and early intervention to outpatient and residential care.

ACCA Services for Veterans

Outpatient Services

Outpatient treatment allows veterans to receive structured support while continuing to live at home and maintain work or family responsibilities. Services may include counseling, therapy, peer support, and coordination of care to address substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns.

Residential Services

Residential treatment provides a more intensive, structured environment with 24/7 support for veterans who need a higher level of care. These programs allow individuals to focus fully on recovery while receiving comprehensive therapeutic and recovery-oriented services.
